Abstract

The objectives of this study are to analyze how slang, as linguistic phenomenon, happens; and how its use identifies people who say slangs; what are its implications in human relations. Beside this, this study intends to observe what are the effects of the meaning the slang produces. This research is justified by the need for understanding and analyzing that language is a social activity. Then, the language phenomena and culture are two inseparable instruments. From this reason, the research questions are listed: what is the relationship between language, society and culture? What is the relationship between language and identity? How slang culturally classifies a social group? What are its effects of meaning? The theoretical basis for this study is based on Hall (2006), Orlandi (2001), Mussalim (2001) and Fiorin (2001). The nature of the research is qualitative Lakatos,2004) and the material of the study consists of one slang from the newspaper Folha de São Paulo online - 2007.

Author Biography

Kátia Maria Capucci Fabri, Uniube

PhD and Master in Linguistic Studies from the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU). Holds a degree in Pedagogy with a specialization in School Administration/Guidance from the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences, and Letters of Ituverava (1982) and a degree in Portuguese/English Language and Literature Teaching from the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences, and Letters São Tomás de Aquino (1975). Completed specialization in Portuguese Language at FIUBE and Applied Linguistics at UFU. Currently, she is a professor in the Language Studies (Distance Education) program at the University of Uberaba (UNIUBE). She has experience in the field of Language Studies, with an emphasis on teaching and production of reading and writing. Her main areas of focus include grammar teaching, teaching reading and writing production, textual linguistics, argumentative semantics, and discourse analysis.
