ATITUDES LINGUÍSTICAS DE INTERNAUTAS DIANTE DE PALAVRÕES E PALAVRAS OFENSIVAS EM RELAÇÃO A JOGOS DE FUTEBOL

Abstract

The linguistic act of swearing is present in human culture, and since childhood, we learn to use profanity and/or offensive words. In the field of football, we witness various forms of cursing, both on and off the football fields, and even on social networks. This paper analyzes the linguistic attitudes of internet users on the Twitter network towards profanity and offensive words during soccer matches. To this end, we use a qualitative methodology to understand what induces the use of pejorative expressions by fans on Twitter during soccer games. We selected expressions that we perceive as recurrent in the aforementioned context, and based on the studies by Queiroz (2005), Swingler (2016), and Souza-Silva, Dias & Bezerra (2021), we used a questionnaire consisting of objective and subjective questions. As theoretical contributions, we draw on the works of Preti (1984), Labov (2008), Hora (2011), Kaufmann (2011), Veloso (2014), Swingler (2016), and others, focusing on concepts of Sociolinguistics, especially in the scope of Linguistic Attitudes and Beliefs, as well as contributions that enable us to understand the phenomenon of name-calling and language in a football context. Finally, we conclude that offensive words and profanity are frequent linguistic resources used by fans to demonstrate the emotions felt during football matches, and the notion of offense and what constitutes a curse word is not uniform among the fans participating in this study.
