Abstract

This article seeks to analyze the locus horribilis in Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights and the way it is used not only to create a Gothic aesthetic and atmosphere, but also to function as a character within the plot, influencing the other characters in the narrative and their behaviors. Based on the definition of the Gothic found in the studies by Fred Botting (1996) and Júlio França (2017), on the reflections on Ecocriticism in Abdurahman Adisaputera et al. (2020), and in the studies on Ecogothic and Ecohorror by Andrew Smith and William Hughes (2013) and Teresa Fitzpatrick (2023), as well as in the postulates of Literary Theory and Criticism by Sandra M. Gilbert and Susan Gubar (2020) and Antonio Candido (2009) regarding characters in narratives. The setting and atmosphere of the novel will be analyzed as a character of the narrative, which plays a crucial role in shaping the other characters, their relationships within the plot, and the emotions the narrative evokes in its readers.

Estudante de Doutorado do Programa de Pós-graduação em Estudos Literários da Faculdade de Ciências e Letras (Unesp), campus de Araraquara. Linha de pesquisa: Teorias e crítica da Narrativa. Nacionalidade: brasileira. Mestre pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Estudos Literários da FCLAr (Unesp) em 2024, com projeto de pesquisa intitulado "A transposição das personagens femininas de Harry Potter para o cinema: uma análise da representatividade feminina de Gina Weasley". Linha de pesquisa: Relações intersemióticas. Graduada do curso de Letras - Português e Espanhol da FCLAr (Unesp), 2022, e no curso de Letras - Inglês da FCLAr (Unesp), 2024.
