Abstract

This paper presents research findings concerning the analyses of the structure [fazer-com-que] in the ENEM model essays as a cause and consequence relationship, according to the assumptions of the constructionist theory (GOLDBERG, 1995; CROFT, 2001; CROFT, CRUSE, 2004; LANGACKER, 2013; PINHEIRO, FERRARI, 2020). The model to explain the pairing between form and function of the structure comes from Neves’ (2000) grammar. The results obtained have shown that, in certain syntactic forms, the structure [fazer-com-que] preserves the prototypical function of the verb fazer, as the central nucleus of the predication; whereas in other forms, the structure receives the function of conjunctional periphrasis. It was also verified that the construction of cause and consequence is the result of a relation that may be in the domain of real cause, a relation between predications that can be verified in the world, and epistemic cause, a relation between a premise and real information, according to Neves (2000). It was verified that, in occurrences in which the nuclear clause had an epistemic verb in its composition, the type of causal construction is the epistemic domain.
