Abstract

The present work proposes the analysis of The House on Mango Street by the Chicana author Sandra Cisneros. The aim of the research is to investigate the influence exerted by the gender constructions established by the Chicano culture in the formation of the identity of the protagonist of the novel. As she is a culturally hybrid subject in development, Esperanza’s trajectory offers a wide range of questions that will be discussed throughout the text with the theoretical contribution of authors who investigate identity issues and gender issues, such as Stuart Hall, Gayatri Spivak, e Gloria Anzaldúa.
