Abstract

The purpose of this article is that of analyzing the monstrous character of the Creature from Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein (1818) through a historical, philosophical and social lens grounded on the Enlightenment movement, considering him as a questioning character, representative of the fractures existing within the social contract, along with the consequences of such ruptures. The works from authors such as Diana Reese (2016), Jean-Jacques Lecercle (1991), Kathryn Harkup (2019) and Laura P. Claridge (1985) will be used in the composition of the theoretical foundation.
