Abstract

The present study aims to analyze the factors that influence the self-evaluation of health of the Brazilian
elderly population. A sample of 23,815 elderly people, aged 60 to 109 years, was used in all regions of Brazil. The Multiple Categorical Regression Model (CATREG, IBM SPSS was applied to the microdata of the elderly people in the National Health Survey (PNS) 2013, the latest edition made by IBGE. Through the Pratt coefficient it was possible to compare the relative importance of the factors found. Among these factors, significant at the 5% level, with a greater influence on the self-assessment of health in the elderly, we can mention: not doing usual activities due to health reasons (16.9%), diagnosis of chronic disease 14.5% and have a medical or dental health plan (10.2%). Factors, such as: difficulty in dressing, feeding and difficulty to go to the doctor, were significant in the model, confirming previous studies in the literature. In addition, the variable know how to read and write represented 4.0% of the explanatory potential of the model. Other variables also presented a relevant pattern for the study, ie, they influence the self-evaluation of health of the group studied, such as difficulty in taking medication, participating in organized social activities (community or religious groups), work, have a hearing impairment and have a visual impairment. Another relevant aspect concerns the fact that the variable does not perform the usual activities have a greater impact on the self-rated health of the Brazilian elderly than having chronic disease.
