Abstract

The main objective of the article was to characterize informal work in Brazil during the period 2012-2023. The article is classified as a bibliographic review. In terms of gender, most informal workers were men; in terms of race or color, they were black or brown, with black or brown women and men representing about two-thirds of the total. Between 2012 and 2023, in relation to the total number of informal workers, there was, on the one hand, a tendency for the participation of black workers and women to increase, while on the other hand, the proportion of white and brown workers and men decreased. In terms of age group, the relative proportion of younger workers decreased, while that of older workers increased. In terms of education level, there was a decrease in the share of informal workers with low levels of education and an increase in the share of those with higher levels of education. In terms of economic activity, there was a decline in the share of informal workers in agriculture and industry and an increase in service activities. In terms of occupational status, the share of auxiliary workers and domestic workers decreased, while that of employees and self-employed workers increased.
