ABSTRACT
New Holland, also known as Dutch Brazil, is considered as a tropical paradise of tolerance up to the present. This article’s objective is to discuss the government of John Maurice, count of Nassau-Siegen, regarding the disharmony between Protestants, Catholics, Jews and native people. The discussion is based on books and periodicals. The conclusion is not unanimous: New Holland was not quite a tropical paradise of tolerance. But, John Maurice’s administration was for its time, an oasis of tolerance and a haven for the arts.
