Abstract

Homeopathy has grown considerably in the last decade. Recognized by the World Health Organization, this medical treatment system is classified in Brazil as Complementary Integrative Practice and Health and many current studies have valued the proof of homeopathy with research based on scientific evidence. As important as recognizing and encouraging further research in homeopathy, the quality of homeopathic medicines is a key parameter for treatment success. In this sense, the general objective of this work was to carry out quality control tests with samples of Calendula officinalis L mother tinctures. Three Calendula officinalis L mother tincture samples were acquired from three different raw material suppliers for Brazilian pharmacies. For each sample, laboratory tests were carried out in triplicate, with three identification tests and the title purity tests in ethanol and dry residue, according to the plant monograph, described in the Brazilian Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia. In samples A and B, the results found showed agreement with the specifications described in the identification and purity tests. In sample C, non-conformity was observed in one of the identification tests and in the ethanol and dry residue purity tests, being outside the specification parameters. Therefore, samples A and B passed and sample C failed. It is concluded that it is necessary to be cautious about the origin of the raw materials used in the master homeopathic pharmacy, as one of the samples failed the quality control parameters addressed in this analysis. Thus, it is recommended that the homeopathic pharmacy periodically carry out quality control analyzes of raw materials, an essential factor for the qualification of suppliers and for the fulfillment of Good Manufacturing Practices.
