Abstract

Intoxication is a serious public health problem worldwide. It is extremely important to monitor the number of cases and define the epidemiological profile linked to them. In this sense, the analysis of notifications can play an important role in the definition of conditions related to exogenous intoxication, at the municipal, state and federal levels. Thus, the current study aims to analyze the characteristics associated with notifications of exogenous intoxications in Sete Lagoas, Minas Gerais, through secondary data notified to the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN in portuguese), in the period from 2011 to 2019. Through SINAN it was possible to identify 2578 notifications of exogenous intoxication in the municipality, with an upward trend and a 25% increase in the number of notifications when compared 2011 and 2019. Notifications regarding female individuals predominated (69%), aged between 20 and 39 years old (44%), brown race (56%), with the main toxic agent being drugs (74%), predominant circumstance as suicide attempt (70%), acute type exposure (89%), with clinical confirmation (96%) and evolution with cure without sequel (97%). There were 21 deaths in the period, representing an average of 2.3 deaths per year due to exogenous intoxication. From the analysis of the data, it was possible to evidence notification failures due to incomplete notifications and possible underreporting, which highlights the need to improve the use of this tool in order to enable data that are more compatible with reality and thus assist in the formulation of public policies aimed at reducing such injuries.
