Abstract

The objective of this paper was to determine the blood profile of young residents in the municipality of Alfenas-MG regarding the ABO and Rh system, in adittion to promote educational activities about blood donation, aiming at increasing their interest in becoming new blood donors. Thus, 948 young male volunteers had their blood collected by venipuncture and had their blood type determinated by tube method test, providing the following results: in relation to the ABO system, 409 individuals in blood group O (43,14%,), 396 in group A (41,77%), 106 in group B (11,08%) and 37 in group AB (3,90%). As for Rh factor, the frequency of positive Rh was 88.5% of the volunteers, white the negative ones were 11.5%. The analyses showed that te prevalence of the phenotypic classes of the ABO and Rh systems were similar to those found in previous papers by other authors. Studies like this one are of great importance to acquire knowledge about the population’s blood profile, allowing the health planning strategies to be carried out by health agents and agencies, in addition to providing support and knowledge to foster a new generation of blood donors.
